He used to sell those stories by the pound
Working in a quaint and cozy town
He was working on a novel ’bout a lovesick clown

He met a woman turned his life around
His friends would say not up but rather down
And when two children came along his book was incomplete

Well he tried to write with paper from the trees
Just to see the forest for the trees

He decided he would complete his degree
Came home every day a quarter past three
But instead of going to school he was hiding the trees

When she found that he had wasted every day
She gathered up the kids and went away
He put his book into the cabinet filed it away

Well he tried to write with paper from the trees

Now he leads a different kind of life
Now he has a different kind of wife
But his son reminds him of the way he used to be

Now he writes a different kind of book
Or maybe he is written by his own book
